- What's the Buzz: Get to Know Sean Brantley
Get to Know Sean Brantley
SEAN BRANTLEY
President
Emory Brantley & Sons Termite
and Pest Control Inc.
Pinellas Park, Florida
How did you get started in the industry?
I was born into this industry, drinking my milk from a B&G gun, so to speak, as a third-generation pest control operator. It just made sense, and even with a little college, it was what I was drawn to. Here I am nearing 40 years later, and it is still the right thing.
What’s the most unusual item in your office or workspace?
Hah ... Gnomes. I really like gnomes. So, in my office you will find a variety of them. It’s a longer story, but thanks to a very longtime and very elderly customer in 1990, I found my appreciation for them.
Did you have any mentors along the way? If so, who, and how did they influence your career path?
Obviously, I can thank my father for much of what I stand for today. I would be remiss not to mention the love and support from my wife, Kris, and how much a spouse means to a successful career. And when it comes to my work with Florida Pest Management Association (FPMA) Government Affairs, I must thank my brother in arms, mentor, and friend for some 30-plus years, D.R. Sapp Jr.
I can tell you that you need to work alongside and directly with your mentors and watch and learn as much as you can. You will know when your time to lead has come by the way your mentor smiles at you and watches you at your best. As the torch passed from him to me, I knew I was ready and had earned his confidence. We talk regularly, and his support is always there. There are a lot of folks that help light the way—listen and learn, and take it all in. And never be afraid to ask.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“Be careful what you ask for—you might just get it.” That one thing pops up quite a bit when dealing with legislators and regulators. The other part is “Think twice, speak once.” It’s helpful to remember these things when in the moment.
What’s the worst piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“Just get it done.” Whenever you hear that, it likely means everything practical, safe, legal, or otherwise just went out the door. It is a call from the commission-breathed sales team, a push from a prime contractor, or even a customer frustrated about the weather that can easily push teams to work beyond your high standards. Never let that happen. Control the job and keep the pace needed. Never just do whatever to get it done; do it right, or don’t do it at all.
What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?
I recently received the FPMA Pioneer Award. Listening to the description as it was read aloud and then hearing my name was huge to me. I am super proud of that award and of the kind words said about me.
Describe yourself in three words.
This is a family publication! Just kidding. How about: Gives his all.
What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
Do it right, be honest, never ever stray from your convictions. Being vertical is easier and pays dividends.
If you could be a fly on the wall anywhere in the world for a day, where would you choose?
We are in pest control; that fly dies pretty fast. Seriously, I don’t want to know some things.
Who would play you in the film of your life?
I have a friend that says Jason Statham, but whoever it is will need a mask!
What is your guiltiest pleasure?
A nice bourbon—or a few.
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
I really would love to learn to fly a helicopter. That would sure save a lot of time driving on Florida roads.
What’s the best impulse purchase you’ve ever made?
Here is the nerd in me about to tempt my fellow nerds: The Xebec Tri-Screen setup. Yep, social media ads worked. I bought the snap screens that make your laptop a three-screen setup when you are traveling or working away from the desk. Buy them; they are worth it.
