Pest Management Standards for Food Processing & Handling Facilities
Since 2007, NPMA guidance on pest management in food facilities has influenced how pest control work is performed in food handling and processing firms. The National Pest Management Association is pleased to release the revised 2026 Pest Management Standards for Food Processing and Handling Facilities. The 2026 revision has been modernized to reflect today’s pest management industry practices, incorporating the latest in integrated pest management efforts and control technology used in sensitive food facilities. Notable updates include:
- Updated US laws and regulations governing work in food facilities.
- Inclusion of language specific to Canada’s food safety regulations which impact pest control work in food processing and handling facilities in Canada
- Inclusion of Health Canada’s list of major food allergens along with important updates to the US list of major food allergens identified by the US Food and Drug Administration
- New Sample Pest Management Inspection Report
- New Sample Risk Assessment
These standards are intended to serve as general guidance for the industry and require the use of independent professional judgement when implementing a pest management plan in food processing and handling facilities. As stated in previous editions, these standards do not preempt local, state, provincial, or federal laws and regulations. Any service provided must comply with relevant statutes and regulations governing pest management, safety and food protection. In addition, food plants may have requirements more stringent than these standards
