QualityPro Accreditation: Setting the Standard for Excellence in Pest Management
Bradley Duncan, M.Ed.H.D., Senior Director of Certification, NPMA
In an industry where professionalism and consumer trust are paramount, the QualityPro accreditation program stands as the gold standard for pest management companies in North America. QualityPro represents the highest level of achievement available to pest control businesses.
What is QualityPro?
QualityPro is a comprehensive accreditation program that establishes standards for professional pest management companies and their employees through rigorous education, training, and certification requirements.
The program, founded in 2004, serves a dual purpose: It provides consumers with protection and confidence when selecting a pest control provider and gives accredited companies access to valuable resources, training materials, and a recognized brand that demonstrates their commitment to professionalism. Often referred to as the pest control industry’s equivalent of the “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval,” QualityPro certification signals that a company operates at the highest professional level.
The QualityPro Standards
QualityPro accreditation is built upon four fundamental principles that guide how companies conduct business:
Business operations: Companies must demonstrate sound business practices that exceed basic regulatory compliance. This includes comprehensive operational procedures, proper documentation, and adherence to industry best practices in daily operations.
Environmental stewardship: Accredited companies commit to responsible pest management practices that minimize environmental impact while maintaining effectiveness.
Consumer relations: QualityPro companies must maintain exemplary standards in customer service, communication, and ethical business practices. This ensures consumers receive transparent, honest, and professional service throughout their relationship with the company.
Employee education: Perhaps one of the most rigorous components, this pillar requires that all customer-facing technical and sales employees demonstrate their knowledge and competence through testing or certified training programs.
The Standards Framework
In the U.S., QualityPro currently operates under Version 6.1 of its standards, which include 18 comprehensive requirements that companies must meet. For Canadian companies, a similar framework of 16 standards applies, adapted to provincial, territorial, and federal regulations. These standards significantly exceed mandatory laws.
Over the past two years, the QualityPro Board of Directors has modernized the standards with two key priorities in mind: increasing the focus on safety and keeping industry standards ahead of evolving human resources trends and regulations. The revisions aim to minimize the administrative burden on participating companies while maintaining the mark of excellence that defines QualityPro accreditation.
Some of the key standards companies must meet include:
- Conducting background checks on all employees
- Maintaining a drug-free workplace policy
- Ensuring all customer-facing sales and technical service employees pass the QualityPro examination(s) or complete an approved training program
- Adhering to proper business licensing and insurance requirements
- Implementing comprehensive safety protocols
- Maintaining proper documentation and record-keeping systems
Employee Training and Testing
One of the most distinctive features of the QualityPro program is Standard 4.1 and its rigorous employee training requirement. Companies have two options to satisfy this critical standard.
Option 1: QualityPro Examination
All customer-facing sales and technical service employees must take and pass the QualityPro exam, which tests knowledge in pest biology and control, consumer relations, safety, and professionalism. Upon successful completion, employees receive a personalized certificate that serves as proof of their professional competence, and certificates are transferable between employers. The exam is administered online and available 24/7 on any device, providing flexibility for busy professionals.
Option 2: QualityPro-Approved Training Program
Companies can develop their own comprehensive training program and have it approved by QualityPro. To qualify, companies must have a dedicated training contact and a learning management system that documents all training steps and delivers content effectively. The training program must cover all topics in the current QualityPro Training Manual.
Existing employees must complete any new training modules within six months of the program’s approval, while newly hired employees and those transitioning to customer-facing roles must complete the entire program within six months of their hire or role-change date. For QualityPro-approved training programs, examination certificates are not available, and training programs are nontransferable between employers.
Benefits of Accreditation
Accredited companies gain access to an extensive array of resources designed to support ongoing excellence, including:
- Hiring and HR resources: Companies receive access to hiring forms, background check procedures, and other tools that help them build and maintain professional teams.
- Training materials: A comprehensive library of employee testing and training resources ensures that companies can continuously develop their workforce.
- Brand recognition: The QualityPro logo and brand serve as powerful marketing tools that companies can use to differentiate themselves in competitive markets. For prospective customers, the QualityPro seal provides immediate assurance of professionalism and quality.
- Industry leadership: Accredited companies position themselves on the cutting edge of professionalizing the pest management industry, demonstrating their commitment to advancing the field beyond minimum regulatory requirements.
- Risk mitigation: By meeting or exceeding QualityPro standards, companies minimize their operational and legal risks while setting themselves up for long-term success.
Additional Certifications and Credentials
The program offers several specialized certifications that accredited companies can pursue. These include:
GreenPro: This certification recognizes companies that excel in environmentally responsible pest management practices, appealing to eco-conscious consumers.
QualityPro Schools: This specialized certification demonstrates expertise in safely managing pest problems in educational settings.
QualityPro Food Safety: Companies serving food processing and handling facilities can earn this certification, which recognizes their expertise in protecting the food supply chain.
Additionally, individual professionals can pursue credentials such as NPMA Pro Certified, Associate Certified Entomologist (ACE) or Board Certified Entomologist (BCE), further demonstrating their technical expertise and commitment to the profession.
The Application Process
Becoming QualityPro accredited follows four simple steps. Companies will complete the online application to gain access to all QualityPro resources, valued at over $15,000, that include sample bid letters, manager training, and an Occupational Safety and Health Administration toolbox. These resources are designed to help companies complete their accreditation requirements. Companies will have six months from application approval to certify their compliance with all standards and provide documentation demonstrating their adherence to each requirement.
For companies that have not yet been in business for two years, the program offers flexibility through a one-time application fee that grants access to QualityPro resources.
Prospective applicants can preview the process by signing up for a test credential, allowing them to explore the requirements and resources before committing to the full application.
Why QualityPro Matters
In an industry where consumers often struggle to see the differences between service providers, QualityPro accreditation provides clarity and confidence. Choosing a QualityPro-accredited company means consumers are selecting a business that has voluntarily submitted to rigorous standards and continuous oversight from an external organization, ensuring they receive service from trained, tested professionals who operate according to established industry best practices.
For the pest management industry itself, QualityPro raises the bar and encourages professionalization across the sector. By establishing clear, comprehensive standards and recognizing companies that meet them, the program creates positive competitive pressure that elevates the entire industry.
For companies seeking to demonstrate their professionalism and commitment to excellence, QualityPro accreditation remains the industry’s most respected and recognized credential.
