NPMA Releases New Guide to Hiring and Developing Pest Control Sales Representatives
NPMA is pleased to announce the release of its newest workforce resource, the Guide to Hiring and Developing Pest Control Sales Representatives. Developed through NPMA’s Workforce Development program, this guide is the third in a series of hiring resources designed to help pest management companies identify, hire, and develop talent using a skills-based approach.
Sales representatives play an important role in business growth, from identifying qualified leads and building client relationships to communicating solutions and closing sales. Yet hiring for these positions can be challenging when job descriptions focus too heavily on traditional qualifications or years of experience. This new guide offers a framework for identifying the skills that matter most while recognizing that candidates may bring different strengths and develop other skills over time.
A Skills-Based Approach
- The guide encourages companies to focus on the core abilities needed for sales success rather than requiring every candidate to meet the same set of qualifications. By identifying essential skills and allowing flexibility in how candidates develop them, companies can:
- Focus on the skills most relevant to their sales roles
- Avoid unnecessary qualifications that may limit the candidate pool
- Recognize transferable skills and different candidate strengths
- Adapt job descriptions to their organization's needs and sales markets
- Identify opportunities for employee development and growth
What's Inside
The guide provides practical resources to help companies create job descriptions, evaluate candidates, and identify opportunities for development, including:
- Key skills across eight core areas: sales and closing abilities, client relationship management, communication and presentation, technical pest control knowledge, territory management and planning, resilience and self-motivation, administrative and reporting skills, and flexibility and adaptability
- A skills-based sample job description that companies can adapt to their needs
- Interview questions to help guide the hiring process
- A skills assessment framework for evaluating abilities
- Guidance on identifying skill gaps to inform hiring decisions and employee development
Built for Different Business Needs
Not every sales representative needs every skill, and different markets may require different areas of emphasis. The guide encourages companies to determine which abilities are essential for their roles, recognize where candidates have room to grow, and consider which skills can be learned after hiring. This flexible approach helps companies create job descriptions that reflect their needs without unnecessarily limiting potential candidates.
The Guide to Hiring and Developing Pest Control Sales Representatives joins NPMA’s existing Guide to Hiring and Developing Pest Control Service Managers and Guide to Hiring and Developing Pest Control Client Service Representatives. Together, these three resources support a skills-based approach to hiring and developing employees across key roles in the pest management industry.
The Guide to Hiring and Developing Pest Control Sales Representatives is available as part of NPMA’s Workforce Development resources.
