World Pest Day
“World Pest Day” was initiated by the Chinese Pest Control Association, and co-sponsored by the Federation of Asian and Oceania Pest Managers’ Association (FAOPMA), the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), and the Confederation of European Pest Management Associations (CEPA).
World Pest Day serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the vital role of professional pest management in addressing pest-related challenges. It showcases the dedication and expertise of pest management professionals in ensuring a safe, pest-free environment for individuals, communities, and industries worldwide.
History of World Pest Day:
The inaugural ceremony was held at the Beijing Hotel on June 6th, 2017, with 300 invited guests, including members of the media, industry leaders, and academia. In 2018, World Pest Day was celebrated on June 6 in Portugal, during the Global Summit of Pest Management Services for Public Health and Food Safety.
World Pest Day was created to:
- Increase public, government, and media awareness of the important role pest management organization plays in protecting public health.

The Moroccan Pest Control Association’s (Association Marocaine des Professionnels de la Dératisation, Désinsectisation et Déreptilisation, (AM3D) ) Efforts to Prevent an Epidemic Following the 2023 Al Haouz Earthquake.
On September 8, 2023, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Morocco’s Al Haouz Province causing catastrophic and widespread destruction across the region. This devastating event caused more than 2,900 casualties and 5,600 injuries to people, the loss of over 40,000 horses and livestock, and an estimated $7 billion USD in damages.
In the wake of this natural disaster, the risk of a vector-borne disease epidemic was high. To minimize the spread of disease, Morocco’s national association for pest management (Association Marocaine des Professionnels de la Dératisation, Désinsectisation et Déreptilisation, (AM3D)) collaborated with national and local authorities in the impacted regions to provide professional pest control and disinfection services. Member companies of the AM3D volunteered their services to locate and remove venomous snakes and scorpions in affected areas, and to treat for vector pests including flies and mosquitoes. Pest control professionals also disinfected emergency tents and temporary facilities built for survivors and emergency responders as well as assisting authorities in the disinfection and removal of dead livestock and people. The quick actions of AM3D to consolidate and deploy professional pest management companies to perform under the direction of health authorities played an important role in preventing the spread of vector-borne disease in this already devastated region.

Indian Pest Control Association’s (IPCA) Efforts to Control Vector Pests in the Wake of Severe Flooding in 2019
In August 2019, the city of Kolhapur located in the western Indian state of Maharashtra inundated with extreme rain resulting in catastrophic flooding. The flooding displaced more than 1.3 million people and resulted in more than 30 human deaths. In addition to the human toll, thousands of livestock animals were lost in the flooding. This dreadful event gave rise to conditions that were especially conducive to infestations of pests of public health importance.
The Indian Pest Control Association (IPCA) collaborated and coordinated with the City of Kolhapur’s health authority and disaster management team to identify areas of standing water and other pest breeding locations in need to attention. Volunteers from participating IPCA member companies and representatives from industry suppliers worked to treat standing water with larvicide, apply appropriately labeled insecticide to critical locations and document necessary repairs or projects required for long term recovery and minimization of pest conducive conditions. These efforts were instrumental in protecting the residents of Kolhapur from mosquito borne diseases like malaria, dengue as well as pathogens vectored by flies and rodents which proliferated in the wake of the flooding.
