Yellow Fever – The Scourge Revealed

  • A brief history of the disease and its impact on society in the U.S.
  • Discussion of the experiments done in Cuba by the Walter Reed Commission, using human volunteers, that elucidated the mode of transmission
  • Global impact of the findings, aftermath of the experiments, and fate of the members of the Reed Commission and some of the volunteers.

Yeast as a Trojan Horse for Termite Control

Researchers at LSU have developed modified yeast that can be fed to termites to destroy the protozoa responsible for wood digestion in the termites’ guts. The demise of these protozoa results in the death of the termites. The products of the modified yeast are very specific for the wood digesting protozoa, which means they are effective in small amounts and have low general toxicity and environmental impact. Controlling Bed Bugs Where There Are No Beds
