Yellow Fever — The Scourge Revealed
Stanton E. Cope, PhD, Captain, Medical Service Corps, United States Navy
This non-technical, historical presentation focuses on yellow fever and some of the events by which the veil of this terrible scourge was lifted. There are three main parts to the talk:
- A brief history of the disease and its impact on society in the U.S.;
- Discussion of the experiments done in Cuba by the Walter Reed Commission, using human volunteers, that elucidated the mode of transmission;
- Global impact of the findings, aftermath of the experiments, and fate of the members of the Reed Commission and some of the volunteers.
Additionally, papers, books and other items (some from the 18th century) will be on display. These items, including a reprint signed and corrected by Major Walter Reed, are from CAPT Cope's award-winning collection on yellow fever.
The pre-convention program experience begins Saturday, October 16 with a welcome reception, followed by short programs offered on Sunday and Monday at the Grand Wailea and the Hilton Waikkoloa.
The pre-convention trip registration fee is $150 for registrations received before September 3, 2010, and $175 for registrations received between September 3 and October 20, 2010.
